New report on SCP launched during the Belgrade

The report "Sustainable consumption and production in South East Europe and Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia - Joint UNEP-EEA report on the opportunities and lessons learned" can be downloaded from:

This report was jointly prepared by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the European Environment Agency (EEA) to support the development of sustainable consumption and production (SCP) policies and implementation activities in the countries of South East Europe (SEE) and Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA). The report was prepared for the Sixth Ministerial Conference 'Environment for Europe' held in Belgrade in October 2007.

The goal of the report is to identify opportunities for and barriers to more sustainable consumption and production in the SEE and EECCA countries, and to highlight relevant experience which could be replicated throughout the region.

The main part of the report provides detailed information and a review of SCP initiatives in key production-consumption areas:

- industry,

- food,

- buildings,

- transport,

- waste.

The analysis in each of these areas is illustrated by examples of implementation of SCP initiatives at local level, drawing on 18 city studies carried out for this report in 11 of the 18 SEE and EECCA countries covered. Many SEE and EECCA countries face similar problems and there is huge potential to share knowledge and experiences and work towards a common path to sustainability. Cities have acted as potential catalysts for change as shown by a large number of local sustainability initiatives.

Improving the environmental performance and in particular the energy efficiency of products and stimulating their market uptake are the core objectives of a package put forward by the European Commission today. It sets out a series of voluntary and obligatory actions to support a coherent and dynamic policy in the EU and internationally, helping to define eco-friendly products, informing the consumer through improved labelling and supporting their purchase through public procurement and fiscal incentives.

New director of the Romanian National Environmental Protection Agency

Starting with the 12th of February 2009, the Romanian National Environmental Protection Agency has a new president. Mr. Mihail Fâcă replaced Mr. Nagy, as member of the EEA Management Board and also as member of the Network of the Head of Environment Protection Agencies. He is an expert on environmental issues and has many years of experience in public administration, like county manager and director of the Ploiesti Autonomous Authority for Public Services.

Assessing an IPCC assessment. An analysis of statements on projected regional impacts in the 2007 report

PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency has found no errors that would undermine the main conclusions in the 2007 report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on possible future regional impacts of climate change. However, in some instances the foundations for the summary statements should have been made more transparent. The PBL believes that the IPCC should invest more in quality control in order to prevent mistakes and shortcomings, to the extent possible.

The mere protection of valuable nature areas, although still necessary, will not be sufficient for reducing global biodiversity loss in the coming decades. To strongly reduce the rate of biodiversity loss, structural changes in consumption and production are needed. A reduction in meat consumption would be of great benefit. In addition, changes are needed especially in agriculture, forestry, fishery and in the supply of energy.
